The Whitworth u3a (University of the Third Age) invites retired or semi-retired individuals from Whitworth and nearby areas to join. It focuses on sharing interests and experiences rather than obtaining qualifications. Members can engage in creative, leisure, or educational activities with others who share similar interests, and all groups are led by members themselves.
Whitworth u3a held its first meeting in April 2017 and had an inaugural meeting in June, attracting 35 members, which grew to 45 within two months. The group now meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Hallfold United Reformed Church in Whitworth, with over 100 members. Monthly meeting fees are £2.

Whitworth is a small but popular town situated in the Rossendale Valley in the North West of England at the foot of the Pennines. It is situated in Lancashire with the towns of Bacup to the North and Rochdale to the South. Whitworth covers around 7 square miles and consists of Healey, Broadley, Whitworth, Facit and Shawforth. The 2011 census showing a population of 7,500. The town is twinned with Kandel in Germany.
To the south of the valley there is a disused 1800's railway line which is now a local nature reserve - Healey Dell. Healey Dell has many features of the industrial past. There are footpaths, bridleways, a cycle route and Fairies Chapel. The railway viaduct stands at 150 feet over the River Spodden.
